The Midwest Tesla Supercharger Guide (2026) — Coverage, Routes, and Gaps
Where the network works, where it doesn't, and what a real driver knows.
Two of my Teslas have combined for roughly 190,000 miles of Midwest driving. A lot of that has been road trips — Chicago to Minneapolis, Des Moines to Milwaukee, weekends in the Ozarks, family visits in the Dakotas. This is what I've learned about the Tesla Supercharger network across our five most-driven states — Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri — and how to plan around the gaps that still exist.
Tesla adds new sites almost every week, so specific counts change. Rather than list every location (which the Tesla in-car map and PlugShare do better than any article), this guide focuses on the structural stuff — which corridors are strong, which are weak, and how to plan a Midwest road trip that never has you sweating range.
The state of Midwest Supercharger coverage in 2026
In 2026, Supercharger coverage across the Midwest is very good on interstates, solid in metros, and improving but still spotty off the beaten path. The Tesla in-car navigation will confidently plan any interstate trip within the region without stress; off-interstate routes still require a look at the map first.
Rough shape of the network right now:
- Interstates: I-80, I-90/I-94, I-35, I-70, and I-55 all have Supercharger sites at roughly 60–100 mile intervals — sometimes closer. On any of these, you can drive from state edge to state edge and never think about charging.
- Metro areas: Chicago, Twin Cities, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Des Moines, Madison, Indianapolis — all have multiple in-city or nearby Supercharger sites. Weekend errands are painless.
- Rural gaps: Central Iowa off I-80, northern Wisconsin, most of Missouri south of I-44, the Iron Range in Minnesota — Supercharger coverage is thinner. Level-2 chargers become important.
Key corridors — where the network shines
These are the routes I use regularly. All of them are trivial to plan — the Tesla nav picks stops that work, and stops are close enough together that you're never in a bind.
- Chicago to Minneapolis / St. Paul (I-90/I-94, ~410 mi): The main corridor into the Twin Cities. Supercharger sites at Rockford, Madison, Tomah, Eau Claire, and multiple options as you approach the metro. Fine as a 1-stop trip in a Long Range Tesla; 2-stop is more comfortable.
- Chicago to Des Moines (I-80, ~330 mi): Coverage along I-80 in Iowa is genuinely dense — sites at the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Grinnell, and multiple in the Des Moines metro. Easy 1-stop drive.
- Chicago to St. Louis (I-55, ~300 mi): Supercharger sites at Bloomington, Springfield, and both suburbs of St. Louis. Straightforward.
- Minneapolis to Kansas City (I-35, ~440 mi): Longest of these corridors and the most exposed to weather. Supercharger sites at Albert Lea, Des Moines, and Kansas City metro. 2-stop trip; not stressful.
- Detroit / Indianapolis to Chicago (I-94/I-90, ~280 mi): Suburban Chicago is the challenge (traffic, not charging). Multiple stops available along the corridor.
State-by-state: what to expect
Illinois Strong
The best-covered state in the region. Dense Chicago metro coverage plus solid corridors along I-90, I-94, I-88, I-80, I-55, and I-70. Even off-interstate towns (Bloomington, Champaign, Springfield, Peoria) have Supercharger sites within a reasonable drive.
Watch: deep southern Illinois below I-70 is thinner. Plan carefully if you're heading toward Cairo or Metropolis.
Iowa Good on interstates, thin off them
I-80 across the state is well-covered — the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Grinnell, Des Moines, and Council Bluffs all have Supercharger sites. Coverage in the Des Moines metro is genuinely good.
Watch: western Iowa off I-80, and most of the state north of I-80 (Cedar Falls / Waterloo excepted). If you're headed to Okoboji or the Loess Hills, plan Level-2 stops.
Wisconsin Strong east, weaker west
Milwaukee and Madison have good coverage. The I-90/I-94 corridor through the state is solid. Green Bay is served. The Wisconsin Dells area picked up a Supercharger site recently and it's meaningfully improved that region for road trippers.
Watch: the western half of the state (west of I-90) is thinner. Northwoods lake trips still require charging strategy.
Minnesota Solid in the metro
Twin Cities metro has strong coverage. The I-35 and I-94 corridors are well-served through the metro and into surrounding areas. Rochester and Duluth both have Supercharger sites.
Watch: northern Minnesota above Duluth (Iron Range, Grand Marais, BWCA gateway towns) is the biggest gap in the state. Tesla has been adding sites but coverage is still spotty. Plan.
Missouri Interstate-only mostly
I-70 (St. Louis to Kansas City) and I-44 (St. Louis to Springfield/Joplin) both have reasonable Supercharger coverage. St. Louis and Kansas City metros are well-served. Columbia has a site.
Watch: central and southern Missouri off I-44/I-70 is the biggest desert in the region. The Ozarks, Lake of the Ozarks area, Cape Girardeau — all have limited Supercharger coverage. Level-2 network is your friend here.
Charging deserts to know about
These are the areas where I'd genuinely plan a Level-2 charging stop or an overnight charge, not just a Supercharger swing:
- Northern Minnesota above the Twin Cities. Coverage gets thin fast north of Duluth. Ely, Grand Marais, and the BWCA area still lean on Level 2 for now.
- Western Iowa off I-80. Sioux City, Storm Lake, and the northwest quadrant are underserved.
- Central and southern Missouri. The Ozarks region — Branson, Lake of the Ozarks, most of the state south of I-70 and west of I-44 — is the region's biggest gap.
- Western Wisconsin north of I-94. Lakeshore vacation country still requires planning.
- Rural Nebraska and Dakotas (if you head that direction). Not "Midwest" strictly but adjacent — coverage drops off sharply once you leave I-80 or I-29.
In all of these areas, the practical answer is a mix of: (a) using the Tesla app's "destination charger" filter for hotels and businesses with Level-2 chargers, (b) using PlugShare to find non-Tesla CCS or J1772 chargers with your adapter, and (c) building in overnight charging when you know the destination has a plug.
V3 vs V4 stalls and real charging speed
Most Midwest Supercharger stalls are V3 (up to 250 kW peak). A growing number of newer sites feature V4 stalls (up to 350 kW), with longer cables that reach around non-Tesla vehicles and, in some markets, integrated payment terminals for non-Tesla EVs.
Real-world charging speed is more about your battery than the stall:
- Arriving with a warm, low-state-of-charge battery: you'll charge near peak (200+ kW) for the first 15–20 minutes.
- Arriving with a cold battery: expect 30–50 kW for the first 10–15 minutes while the pack warms.
- Above 80% state of charge: charging tapers dramatically. Below 50% is where the speed lives.
The universal trick: route to Superchargers using the Tesla in-car navigation, not just by driving there. The nav pre-conditions your battery on the way, and you arrive at a temperature that lets you charge at full speed. This is worth 10–15 minutes on a long trip.
Non-Tesla EVs on Superchargers now
As of 2026, most non-Tesla EVs with an NACS adapter (the connector formerly known as Tesla's proprietary plug, now the industry standard) can use compatible Tesla Supercharger stalls. Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai/Kia, and others have been progressively enabled.
Two practical notes:
- Not every Supercharger site is open to non-Tesla vehicles. The Tesla app filters for compatibility — check before you commit to a stop.
- Non-Tesla vehicles typically use V4 stalls (with the longer cables) more easily than V3 stalls. Some V3 sites are frustrating for CCS-cars because the cable barely reaches.
This has been a meaningful net-good for the Midwest — more paying customers means more Tesla investment in the network, and Superchargers being the reliable option has raised the floor for all EV road-tripping in the region.
Planning tips from 190,000 miles
- Trust the in-car nav on interstates. It picks reasonable stops. Follow it.
- Don't trust the in-car nav's time estimates in extreme weather. Add 15 minutes to any stop below 20°F for battery pre-conditioning + slower initial charging.
- Charge to 80–90% before leaving home, 100% if it's a long trip and cold. Battery health is fine for the occasional 100% charge before departure.
- Aim to arrive at Superchargers below 20% state of charge. That's where charging is fastest. Rolling in at 60% wastes both time and stall availability.
- Have a plan for peak times. Holidays and Sunday afternoons at popular sites (Rockford IL, Onalaska WI, Des Moines) can have waits. The Tesla app now shows real-time stall availability.
- Get the PlugShare app anyway. Even as a Tesla driver, PlugShare's community reviews save you from broken chargers, sketchy locations, and closed-for-renovation sites.
- Overnight L2 at a hotel is a superpower. The Tesla app filters for hotels with destination chargers. Waking up to a full battery beats any Supercharger stop.
